What is World Cleanup Day?

World Cleanup Day is an international initiative of the citizens movement Let's Do It World to simultaneously clean up litter on streets, squares, parks, parking lots, along rivers and in nature. The idea started a few years ago in Estonia.

Plastic Soup Foundation is organizing World Cleanup Day in the Netherlands for the fifth time.
For more information about the international event, visit www.worldcleanupday.org.

When is World Cleanup Day?

World Cleanup Day, as the name suggests, is held worldwide in one day. This year it will be on Saturday September 17, 2022. Save the date! Clean ups across the country can start at different times trhoughout the day.

Is Saturday 17 September not convenient? Or are you a participating school or organization and during the week would work better for you. Ofcourse you can organize your Clean up day during the week leading to World Cleanup Day and we will support all actions that register via our website.

Good luck!

Can I also organize a clean-up campaign on a day around September 17?

Yes that is allowed! The focus is on creating awareness for the plastic problem through a clean-up & sponsorship campaign. If this is more convenient for you to cleanup, for example, days before or after and more colleagues or friends warm up to participate, it will only contribute to the success of your clean-up and sponsor action!

Who organizes World Cleanup Day in the Netherlands?

In the Netherlands, Plastic Soup Foundation is responsible for organizing World Cleanup Day. Plastic Soup Foundation has been successfully creating awareness for the plastic problem since its foundation in 2011.

Plastic Soup Foundation has developed this website to make it clear to everyone who participates, how you can set up a fundraiser campaign, and what the total numbers are that we have raised together! We keep in touch with the global organization LetsDoItWorld. In addition, we are in contact with all initiatives and coordinate the media attention around World Cleanup Day in the Netherlands.

Why would you clean up someone else's litter?

It is of course annoying if there is litter that does not belong to you. But on World Cleanup Day we will work with as many people and parties as possible with a positive attitude. We can do something about it! With this visible action supported by our #NotInOurBackyard campaign, we create awareness for the litter problem and the plastic export to countries such as Indonesia. In addition, we hope to inspire everyone that cleaning up is the social norm. Hopefully this means that from now on fewer people will leave their waste on the street.

Why should I start a fundraising campaign?

Cleaning rubbish in your area is a good start, but we all know we need to tackle the problem at its origin.

That's why we decided to do it a little differently this year! We invite you to turn your cleanup campaign into a fundraising campaign and support Plastic Soup Foundation to tackle plastic pollution at the source and make an impact worldwide!

With the #NotInOurBackyard campaign, this year we want to create awareness and raise money to curb the export of plastic waste to non-European countries. Did you know that 70 million kilo of plastic waste is exported from the Netherlands to other countries and dumped there every year? Take action now!

Register now!

If you don't want to start a raise funds, you can still organize a clean-up campaign and share it with your network. You can indicate on your page that you are not collecting money, but only cleaning during World Cleanup Day!

Can I participate without a donation?

Yes, of course!
If you really don't want to start a sponsorship campaign, you can still create a action page and share it with your network. You can indicate here that you are not collecting money, but only cleaning up. => You can choose the option of '1' euro for a private action or '5' euro for a Teamaction!

Who are participating in World Cleanup Day?

Cleanups are organized throughout the country by individuals, organizations and schools! Don't miss out and sign up!

Can I add other people to my action?

Yes! If you have created an action, people can join your team. If you are an organization, you can share the personal link with everyone you you want to join the event.
You do need your personal password for this. Don't have this password anymore? Then we will send you a new one!

Who organizes the clean-up campaigns throughout the Netherlands?

Companies, environmental associations, organisations, schools, sports clubs, neighbourhoods, action groups, NGOs and individuals are taking the initiative to organize a cleanup and fundraising campaign.

Where is the best place to clean up?

Any place you think can be successful and fun!
Unfortunately, you can find litter almost everywhere in the Netherlands, but you will find it especially in parks, along candy routes, at supermarkets, busy squares, along bicycle paths and in bends of roads and exits (pay attention to safety!).

This year, we advise you to keep our theme #NOT IN MY BACKYARD in mind when choosing the location for your clean-up campaign.

What happens to the money raised?

With your fundraising campaign you will support Nina and Plastic Soup Foundation. With our campaigns, research, education and actions we tackle plastic pollution at the source and we can support people like Nina in their fight against plastic waste export from the Netherlands. Read more about Plastic Soup Foundation on our website: www.plasticsoupfoundation.org

Who is in charge of the national organization?

Plastic Soup Foundation is in contact with the worldwide organization LetsDoItWorld. In addition, we are in contact with all initiatives and coordinate the media attention around World Cleanup Day in the Netherlands.

How can I participate with my school or class?

On the Wednesday before World Cleanup Day we organize a special day for schools. This year's school edition is on Wednesday, September 14, 2022. Registration for this day is already open! Look at: Participating as a school or after school care? (worldcleanupday.nl).

How do I become a partner of the World Cleanup Day?

World Cleanup Day is possible thanks to the support of our partners, sponsors and all supporters.

Would you like to know more about possibilities for collaboration? Send a message to: michelle@plasticsoupfoundation.org Information about becoming a supporter can also be found here: for partners.

How do I get the materials that I need for the cleanup?

We have chosen to bring and collect as little material as possible to all locations. That will saves thousands of kilometers driving back and forth through the country! Let's keep it simple, picking up litter is very easy after all.

A few tips: if you can't/don't want to bend down to pick up waste, a littergrab can be useful. We advise initiators of cleanup campaigns to contact their own municipal waste service by telephone or via the website to borrow littergrabs. The municipal cleaning department or the Public Works or Public Information departments can often help you further. We recommend that participants use reusable household or gardening gloves and garbage bags.

What about hygiene while cleaning up?

Waste on the street or in nature is of course dirty. They are mostly food packaging, sometimes with leftover food still in it. We therefore recommend that participants wear reusable household or garden gloves. Latex gloves are too thin and tear easily.

What about my safety while cleaning up?

The safety of the participating volunteers is important!

In addition, we ask everyone not to organize cleanup campaigns directly along a busy main road, a national highway, a highway or a railway line. Traffic does not count on your presence in those places. Pay attention to young children, ensure that parents are in the immediate vicinity to watch over their safety and to protect them from, for example, suddenly crossing the road. We therefore recommend that you look for an extra safe environment with children for the cleanup campaign: a park, the forest or beach or a quiet, car-free street. You are responsible for your own safety.

What clothes are best to wear while cleaning up?

Wear comfortable clothing and, for example, agree with your company or association to all wear the same shirt. That looks good in the picture!

What do I do with my waste?

In the Netherlands, the municipality works with you to collect your waste. You can organize your waste collection yourself by contacting the municipality in advance.

If you don't have that much waste, you can just throw it in garbage bags in the waste container.

What else can I do besides organizing a clean-up and sponsorship campaign in connection with World Clean Up Day?

A lot!!

And this starts with supporting us through our organization the Plastic Soup Foundation. This is possible as an individual, but certainly also as an organization!

We have a large network of partners, our Angels, who support us and have made a real commitment to support us in our mission in the longer term.

Please do not hesitate to contact us to discuss the various options.

How do you handle my privacy?

If you register to participate in a cleanup campaign, leave your e-mail address and your name in the registration form. The Plastic Soup Foundation will not use the personal data for commercial purposes. Read our full privacy statement here.

Is your question not listed? Please feel free to contact us!

Is there promotional material so that I can make it clear that we are participating?

Yes! We have a special toolkit available for both private and organizational sponsoractions, swhere you can download promotional material. Especially via social media you can help us enormously to pass on the message to the whole of the Netherlands.

You can find this toolkit here: (link will be added soon!)

We hope to have a record number of participants this year, with the end result being a record amount of sponsorships! So we especially like to #tag and like and share our posts!
